The Ancilla College men's soccer team defeated the Community College of Baltimore (MD) County-Essex 2-0 in their first pool play match at the NJCAA Division I Men's Soccer National Tournament. The Chargers, who are making their first national tournament appearance got a pair of goals from MCCAA Player of the Year Romario Piggott. Gianluca Marchetti and Taylor Medina combined to shut out the Knights.
Piggott opened the scoring in the 6th minute taking a pass from Brandon Duarte and putting it passed Essex goalkeeper Trevor Brookhart. The score remained 1-0 until Piggott scored, again from Duarte, in the 52nd minute to secure the win.
Marchetti made four saves in 84 minutes of play. He had to come out for six minutes due to an issue with his uniform but not before making a spectacular save on a Knights penalty kick to preserve the shutout.
The sixth ranked Chargers (17-1-0) will play third ranked Iowa Western Community College with the winner advancing to the semi-finals on Friday afternoon.
