On Monday night, the Michigan Community College Athletic Association held a reception to honor former Kalamazoo Valley Community College athletic director and MCCAA President Dick Shilts for being awarded the NJCAA Service award back in 2012. The MCCAA and Region XII have been looking for a good time to honor Shilts and the Shanty Creek meeting provided the perfect backdrop for the ceremony.

[MCCAA] Macomb's Biebuyck named Athletic Director of the Year

Macomb Community College's Brent Biebuyck has been named the named the MCCAA Athletic Director of the Year for the 2012-13 season. Biebuyck earned the award due to his hard work with inside the Macomb Community College athletic department but also his work in the MCCAA and Region XII. Biebuyck is the MCCAA Eastern Conference Director and also the Region XII Softball Chair. He also helps with the administration of the Region XII baseball and District G & H softball tournaments.

[MCCAA] Grand Rapids CC wins Charlie Chanter MCCAA All-Sports Award

Grand Rapids Community College won the Charlie Chanter MCCAA All-Sports Award for the second consecutive year. The Raiders won the Western Conference Volleyball title, Finished runner up in the MCCAA Golf Tournament and Men's Basketball. They finished 4th in baseball and 5th in men's basketball. The Raiders softball team finished second. They got bonus points for winning the MCCAA Volleyball Tournament and finishing runner-up in the MCCAA Golf Tournament.

The Raiders finished with a 87.98 point average, 3.65 points ahead of second place Mott Community College. Oakland CC, last years runner-up, finished third. This is the 14th time the Raiders have won the Charlie Chanter All-Sports Award.

[Baseball] Jackson's Higgins, St. Clair's Fry drafted in third day of MLB Draft

A pair of Michigan Community College Athletic Association sophomore pitchers were selected on the third day of the Major League Baseball draft. Jackson Community College's Blake Higgins was taken in the 16th round today by the St. Louis Cardinals. The 6' 6" right hander pitched in just six games this season, starting three with a 2-0 record and two complete games. He threw 23.2 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs, all earned, walking 18 walks and striking out 40 batters. He posted a 2.28 ERA on the season. He was taken on the 485th pick of the draft.

[Baseball] Kellogg's Mayle, Henry Ford's Greear have earned All-American honors

Kellogg Community College sophomore pitcher Chad Mayle and Henry Ford's sophomore outfielder have been named NJCAA Division II Baseball All-Americans today. Mayle was named a NJCAA Division II First Team All-American. Mayle, who was named Player of the Year in the MCCAA, pitched 57 and 2/3 innings allowing 39 hits, 11 runs, 6 earned, walking 21 and striking out 56. He record an 8-1 record with a 0.94 ERA on the season.

[Baseball] Madison jumps out early eliminates Grand Rapids from World Series

Madison (WI) College scored six runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 9-1, seven inning win over Grand Rapids Community College today to eliminated them from the NJCAA Division II Baseball World Series. The Raiders (28-28) managed just five hits all day and did not score until the bottom of the seventh inning. The loss end the Raiders season.

[Baseball] Bender's pair of RBI doubles power Grand Rapids past Lackawanna in World Series

Brendan Bender has RBI doubles in the sixth and eighth inning to help the Grand Rapids Community College beat Lackawanna (PA) College 6-2 in the elimination bracket of the NJCAA Division II Baseball World Series in Enid, OK. Bender had a two out double in the sixth to score Ian Stankus, who had reached on an error, to give Grand Rapids a 3-1 lead. He then drove a ball of the wall in left field with one out in the bottom of the eight to score Mike Batstelli, who had reached on a bunt single, to key a three run inning. Bender went 2-for-4 with two double, two RBI and a sacrifice bunt.

[Baseball] Grand Rapids CC drops opening game of World Series to Scottsdale (AZ) CC, 8-3

The Grand Rapids Community College baseball team dropped the opening game of the NJCAA Division II Baseball World Series to #3 - Scottsdale (AZ) Community College 8-3 on Saturday. The Artichokes used a four run fifth inning to break open a two run game. Grand Rapids scored scored three in the sixth but could not score the rest of the game.

Muskegon Community College shot a final round 305 to finish eighth at the 2013 NJCAA Division II Golf National Tournament. The Jayhawks finished two shots behind Southeast (NE) Community College and one shot ahead of Tyler (TX) Junior College. Muskegon's four day total was 1193.

[Softball] Cougar's Kotecki and Murphey named NJCAA Division II Softball All-Americans

Kalamazoo Valley Community College softball players Amanda Kotecki and Bethaney Murphey have been named NJCAA Division II Softball Third All-Americans. Kotecki, a 5-7 freshman infielder, hit .460 in 161 at bats with 12 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 58 RBI. She also stole 18 bases and only struck out eight times. She also posted a .943 fielding percentage.

[Men's Golf] Mott's Schiler is fifth, Muskegon drops to eighth after second day.

Mott Community College golf Gabe Schiller is tied for fifth at the NJCAA Division II National Golf Tournament after the second round. Schiller who fired a 70 today is tied with three other golfers with a three under 141 for 36 holes. Muskegon Community College's Caleb Johnson is tied for 9th with a two under 142 after carding consecutive rounds of 71. David Keenan of Parkland (IL) College is still leading with an eight under 136, after a 70 today.

The Muskegon Community College golf team is seventh after the first round of the NJCAA Division II Golf Nationals being held a Goose Pond Colony in Scottboro, AL. The Jayhawks shot 296 today and are 12 strokes behind defending champion South Mountain (AZ) Community College, who shot a 284. Caleb Johnson led Muskegon CC with a 71 today and Travis Clarke shot a 73.

[Baseball] Grand Rapids CC breaks into top 20 after Region XII Tournament Championship

The Grand Rapids Community College baseball team, fresh of the Region XII Tournament Championship, broke into the top 20 this week at number 20. The Raiders with an overall record of 27-26 will be traveling to Enid, OK in two weeks for the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. They will open the tournament with number four Scottsdale (AZ) Community College on Saturday, May 25th.

[Men's Golf] Muskegon CC, four individual golfers qualify for NJCAA Division II Nationals

The Michigan Community College Athletic Association golf champion Muskegon Community College finished second at the NJCAA Region XII golf tournament to qualify for the NJCAA Division II Golf National. The Jayhawks shot 916 for the 54 hole, two day event at Bedford Valley Golf Club in Battle Creek, MI. Muskegon finished 32 shots behind Owens (OH) Community College who shot 884 to win the Region XII Championship. Both teams will compete next week at the NJCAA Division II Golf Nationals at Goose Pond Colony in Scottsboro, AL. Grand Rapids Community College finished third with a 54 hole total of 924.

[Softball] Kalamazoo Valley's Murphey and Delta's Schrader lead MCCAA softball awards winners

Delta College's Emily Schrader and Kalamazoo Valley Community College's Bethaney Murphey have been named Players of the Year in the Eastern and Western Conference respectively in a vote of conference coaches. Schrader, a 5-3 sophomore shortstop, batted .422 with seven doubles, one home run, nine RBI and 45 runs scored and 18 stolen bases. She also had a .922 fielding percentage for the Pioneers. Murphey, a 5-7 freshman catcher/infielder, batted .518 with 15 double, nine home runs, 56 RBI and 39 runs scores. She also stole two bases and had a .986 fielding percentage for the Cougars. Murphey also earned Freshman of the Year honors in the Western Conference. Macomb Community College's Kam LaCarter was named the Eastern Conference Freshman of the Year. LaCarter, a 5-3 freshman infielder, batted .470 with five doubles, three triples, 11 RBI, 12 stolen bases and 36 runs scored.
