Recent Softball Headlines
Softball - Mon, May. 13, 2013

Delta College's Emily Schrader and Kalamazoo Valley Community College's Bethaney Murphey have been named Players of the Year in the Eastern and Western Conference respectively in a vote of conference coaches.  Schrader, a 5-3 sophomore shortstop, batted .422 with seven doubles, one home run, nine RBI and 45 runs scored and 18 stolen bases.  She also had a .922 fielding percentage for the Pioneers.  Murphey, a 5-7 freshman catcher/infielder, batted .518 with 15 double, nine home runs, 56 RBI and 39 runs scores.  She also stole two bases and had a .986 fielding percentage for the Cougars.  Murphey also earned Freshman of the Year honors in the Western Conference. Macomb Community College's Kam LaCarter was named the Eastern Conference Freshman of the Year.  LaCarter, a 5-3 freshman infielder, batted .470 with five doubles, three triples, 11 RBI, 12 stolen bases and 36 runs scored.

Softball - Sat, May. 11, 2013

The Kalamazoo Valley Community College softball team used a five run first inning to cruise to an 8-1 win in the NJCAA District G Championship game on Friday at Bailey Park in Battle Creek, MI. The Cougars (34-14) were led by Tournament Most Valuable Player Morgan Hill, who threw seven innings allowing just five hits, one run, walking two and striking out six.  Morgan Vanderbor went two for three with a home run, four RBI and a runs scored, while Emily McCarty went 2 for three with three RBI and one run scored.  Katie Lorenz went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and Kala Foerster went 2 for 4 with a run scored. 

Softball - Sat, May. 11, 2013

The Oakland Community College softball team came up just short of the NJCAA National Tournament losing to Cuyahoga (OH) Community College 4-0 in the NJCAA District H Championship game at Bailey Park in Battle Creek, MI. Raiders pitcher Allison Rigling went six innings scattering six hits and allowing four runs including three earned while striking out 10 batters. Margaret Irving was 2 for 3 on the day. Oakland only had five hits in the game. Rigling and Irving were named to the All-Tournament Team along with Sam Chevillet of Oakland. Others on the All-Tournament Team ere Abigail Jewell of Macomb CC, Emily Schrader of Delta College, Kara Fitzgerald of Lakeland (OH) CC, Lexi Sheets, Kayla Schmidt and Britt Hemlock of Cuyahoga (OH) CC. Challenger pitcher Jill Coyle who threw six shutout innings in the championship game was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while Bryan Komlos of Cuyahoga was named District H Coach of the Year.

The Grand Rapids Community College women's softball moved up two spots to number 16 in this week's NJCAA Division II softball poll. The Raiders are 23-11 overall and lead the MCCAA Western Conference with a 16-2 record.
