MCCAA Tabs Cameron Weidenthaler as New Assistant Communications Director
September 18, 2025
The Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) is proud to announce the appointment of Cameron Weidenthaler as its new Assistant Communications Director. Boasting over a decade of experience in collegiate athletic media relations, digital content creation, and communications strategy, Weidenthaler becomes the first Assistant Communications Director in MCCAA history and will work alongside Tim Johnston, Communications Director, to enhance the association's digital footprint and produce weekly social media and website content.
Prior to accepting a role outside of collegiate athletics, Weidenthaler most recently served as the Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations at Wayne State University from 2013-2022. In that role, he was the primary media contact for multiple programs including baseball, men's and women's golf and women's volleyball, while also contributing significantly to men's and women's basketball and football coverage. During his time at the Detroit-based NCAA Division II institution, Weidenthaler championed the department's social media and video production efforts, developed digital content and produced a quarterly alumni magazine, Warrior Within.
Before joining Wayne State, Weidenthaler was an Athletic Media Relations Assistant at the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) for a brief stint and highlighted his time with the NCAA Division I institution by serving as the primary contact for the program's first FBS Bowl Game in 2012. In addition to the bowl game coverage at ULM, he also coordinated press conferences, managed game day operations and produced game day and multimedia content.
Weidenthaler's career in athletic communications began as a graduate assistant at NCAA Division I Western Illinois University from 2010-2012 where he created several publications, assisted in the department's website redesign, and was the primary contact for several sports, as well as the radio voice for the baseball program.
"We are thrilled to welcome Cameron as the MCCAA's first Assistant Communications Director," said MCCAA Executive Administrator, Al Perry. "The creation of this position marks an important step forward in elevating the visibility of our student athletes, teams, and member colleges. And Cameron's wealth of experience in athletic communications will add to how we showcase the exceptional talent across the conference."
Weidenthaler holds a Master's Degree in Sport Management from Western Illinois University and a Bachelor's Degree in Communications from Upper Iowa University.
